Why I Write for Children

After 28 years in the classroom, I've seen firsthand how the right story at the right moment can change a child's day — and sometimes even their life. That's why I began writing. Many of my stories were inspired by the funny, heartfelt, and unforgettable moments I shared with my students and family over the years. They encouraged me to put those stories on paper because they loved hearing them again and again. As a teacher, mom, and grandmother, I believe stories can help children laugh, learn, feel understood, and believe in themselves. My hope is that each book brings families together and sparks meaningful conversations long after the last page is turned.

The Story Behind Oh, Leo!

Oh, Leo! was inspired by my brother Sean's playful Bernedoodle puppy, Leo. From the moment Leo came into our lives, he brought endless laughter, energy, and excitement wherever he went.

Leo absolutely loved swimming and spent his days happily jumping into the pool alongside the kids. He became known for "rescuing" everyone in the water — even when nobody needed saving! During games of Marco Polo, Leo would paddle over to whoever called out, convinced he was the family lifeguard. He even tried to rescue me, Aunt Kerry, while I was playing in the pool.

Although Leo is a big dog, he is truly a gentle teddy bear at heart. His sweet personality, playful spirit, and loving nature make him impossible not to adore. Everyone who meets Leo instantly falls in love with him, and it quickly becomes clear that his adventures deserve a story of their own.

The Story Behind Lilly, No, No!

Lilly, No, No! was inspired by my real-life dog, Lilly — a mischievous little Bichon who has always kept our family laughing. Every funny moment in the story actually happened in real life!

Even at almost 13 years old, Lilly has never outgrown her puppy stage. She still sneaks into the garbage looking for treats, wanders around hoping someone will share their snacks, and somehow always finds trouble. Recently, she has even "graduated" to climbing into the bathroom shower just to drink the water left at the bottom.

Lilly's silly adventures, playful spirit, and lovable personality made her impossible not to write about. What started as everyday family moments became a story filled with laughter, chaos, and love — the kind of memories that make the best children's books.

The Story Behind Joey, No, No!

The story behind Joey, No, No! began with my two sons, Joey and Robbie, who were always getting into mischief when they were little boys. Like many siblings, they kept life exciting, unpredictable, and full of laughter.

Joey had one famous saying whenever something went wrong — "Wobbie did it!" Since he couldn't say his R's yet, Robbie became "Wobbie," and it quickly turned into a running joke in our family. No matter what happened, Joey always seemed to find a way to blame his big brother.

As a teacher, mom, and now grandmother, I've always treasured the funny little moments that make childhood so special. Looking back on the boys' adventures inspired me to turn those memories into a story that families and children could laugh about together.

Today, Joey and Robbie are both grown men, which makes these memories even more meaningful. Joey, No, No! is my way of holding onto those chaotic, joyful years and sharing the love, laughter, and family moments that inspired the story.
